What is Junior Team Canada?

Junior Team Canada is a program to help Canadian companies identify trade and development opportunities in over 17 countries. This year will focus on identifying business opportunities and gathering market intelligence in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. As the name suggests, Junior Team Canada consists of 28 talented Youth Ambassadors selected from across Canada and provides youth with the skills, experience, and knowledge to be tomorrow's leaders.

This year's mission takes place in August 2007. During the mission, Junior Team Canada will focus on trade and development opportunities. The team will be meeting with industry, government, community and youth leaders to identify business opportunities for Canadian companies. In addition the delegates will visit Canadian based development projects to provide support for sustainable development efforts during our time abroad. The role of each Ambassador is to represent their community, company partners, and country while gaining valuable market intelligence and furthering their understanding of global issues. After the mission, Junior Team Canada Ambassadors will return back to Canada to share their new found knowledge and expertise with their peers and the community at large.

Junior Team Canada, has led missions to over 17 countries, including: Argentina, Austria, Chile, Brazil, China, England, Germany, France, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the United States of America. Since 1991, Global Vision has been recognized for their work in providing global education and leadership training to youth around the globe. Mr. Terry Clifford, President and Founder, was honored with the Order of Canada for his dedication to helping youth become active global citizens.

To engage in a successful mission, I am seeking out partnerships with companies and organizations in the IT, Biotech and Education sectors. I will be raising $4,500 from local companies and organizations in these sectors before my departure.

Company Benefits

By taking this opportunity to invest in Global Vision and myself, your organization will have several opportunities to gain exposure dependent on the level of sponsorship you choose. I will be acting as a representative and consultant for your organization/company while having the chance to learn valuable life skills in return.

The Mission and The National Youth Caucus in Ottawa gives your company the ability to get a feel of what youth in the city are doing and get the word out about what your company and Ottawa has to offer. Sponsorship is an excellent way for your company to advertise to future business professionals as well as organizations and governments whom you would otherwise not have the opportunity to encounter. Furthermore, your company name and logo will be referred to other companies during the Mission and National Youth Caucus.

In addition to receiving global exposure your company will gain valuable market intelligence from overseas, learn first hand about Canada's involvement in International Development and Enhance your organizations profile. Additionally, should your company choose the platinum level sponsorship you will get the wonderful opportunity to participate in the networking Luncheons during the National Youth Caucus which will be held here in Ottawa this summer.

Who is Jennifer?

I am in my 3rd year in International Business focusing on marketing and trade in Countries such as Vietnam and Malaysia. As an International Business student, I like to be "in the know" about what is going on in the business world. For this reason, I am currently a part-time research intern with Canadian Council on Africa. My role involves work on the Business Development Services that bring Canadian and African companies and associations in contact with each other. From my experience, this is a project that is invaluable to both parties. I also maintain a full-time summer job with Carleton University as a Marketing Associate which has given me a great opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge I've been developing while in the classroom.

As the former President of Junior Achievement at John McCrae Secondary School and the current President of Perfect Traits Portraits (online at perfecttraits.com), I know firsthand the power of publicity and building contacts. I have had numerous opportunities this year to develop my networking skills through venues such as the APEX conference (not to be confused with APEC which I hope to be selected to attend in November) as well as Concordia's Marketing Conference. In addition, I am connected in the community. I am Carleton's Academic Advisor for SMSA (Sprott Marketing Students Association). I am also one of the chosen students in Carleton's business program who, along with the Dean of the Business School, is in charge of revamping the program as it pertains to student life. This initiative is meant to not only get students more involved in the activities on campus but to tackle the problems of drop out rates among first year students.

So much has been given to me that I feel a sincere need to give back. I am constantly amazed at the length other people will go to help out students in their community. I have learned from and appreciate the value of programs such as this. The opportunities that come with being able to meet with and discuss relevant issues and ideas that professionals in my community are currently working on. I would appreciate the chance to build knowledge that will help me no matter where I go in life. I know that I have more to learn and that JTC can provide me with experiences that I cannot receive any other way.

A partnership with Global Vision and I is a great investment for your company or organization. I have worked hard to be chosen as one of the delegates for this year's mission and I will be working just as hard to provide your company with the contacts, information and publicity that you're looking for.

I believe that the quality of work I do, the drive I have to make the most out of each and every opportunity, and the experience I bring to the table, make me a great delegate to sponsor for this mission.

Thank you,

Jennifer Sarumi

What is involved in the JTC Economic and Development Mission?

Junior Team Canada Economic Missions are teams of young Canadians who travel to foreign markets and explore business opportunities on behalf of Canadian business and industry. Team members network with government, business and education leaders in order to gather key market intelligence. In addition, the JTC team examines the global issues that developing countries are facing, and how Canada can play a lead role in making a difference. There will also be a chance to warm up for the mission and the scheduled meetings and press opportunities with businesses and government departments while at the National Youth Caucus.

At the end of the mission, participants produce market reports that are presented to their sponsors. These reports are also used by Canadian companies and organizations to help further identify opportunities in foreign markets.

As a future business leader of Ottawa now more than ever before, simply having the knowledge taught in the classroom is not sufficient to really succeed in the business world. The things such as leadership, out of the box thinking and soft skills are all an essential part to the profession and yet underdeveloped in the classroom. Programs such as this enhance textbook knowledge and provide students such as myself with personal experiences and growth to add to my International Business degree.

This year's mission will take place on August 13th -31st after the National Youth Caucus in July.
